Cougars Earn a Split in Home finale Doubleheader

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's tennis team split its doubleheader Thursday, falling to UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, in the morning match. The Cougars went on to defeat Eastern Washington in the evening match,7-0, sending the seniors out with a win in the home finale.

The Gauchos jumped out to the early lead grabbing victories at all three doubles positions earning the opening point.

At No. 1 doubles, Ekaterina Kamendova and Aleksandra Cekic battled Michelle Murphy and Sofia Novak. The UC Santa Barbara duo outlasted the Cougars tandem, 8-4. After falling behind, 5-0, to Bryanna Ojeda and Asagi Onaga at No. 3 singles, teammates Elisabeth Fournier and Jessica Gomez surged back to take the lead, 7-6. Ojeda and Onaga were able to outlast the Cougars tandem and earn the victory, 8-7 (4).

In singles action, Cekic picked up her 17th win of the season downing the Gauchos Jill Damion in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Fournier earned the second victory for the Cougars and posted her 20th singles win of the season with a, 6-2, 7-5 (5), win over Sofia Novak.

At No. 4 singles, Marina Nicolas battled Natalia Lozano in a three-set marathon. Nicolas came out strong grabbing the early lead by winning the first-set. Lozano outlasted the WSU sophomore, winning the next two-sets, earning victory, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Senior Bianca Selaru suffered a tough loss in a three-set match to Ojeda at the No. 5 position, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Cougars extended their winning streak against the Eastern Washington Eagles to 19 with the victory in the second match of the doubleheader.

Washington State came out strong winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the opening point.

Marina Nicolas and Bianca Selaru grabbed the first win for the Cougars with a victory over Rachel Berger and Judy Liening, 8-3. Jessica Gomez and Elisabeth Fournier secured the doubles point with an impressive victory topping Caitlin Bampton and Kasie King, 8-5.

In singles play, the two seniors earned victories in their final home matches as a Cougar. At the No. 1 slot, Aleksandra Cekic downed Amanda Mankovits in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. With the win, Cekic ties her career high for wins in a season with 18th and she now has secured 64 singles victories as a Cougar. At the No. 4 slot, Selaru upended Caitlin Bampton, 6-0, 6-1. Selaru secured her 8th singles victory on the year and now has 49 career wins in a Cougar uniform.

Ekaterina Kamendova downed the Eagles Marie Demerath, 6-3, 6-2, while Fournier posted a victory over Berger, 6-0, 6-1. Nicolas earned a straight set victory over Liening, 6-0, 6-3, while Jessica Gomez upended Heather Handwerk, 6-1, 6-1, finishing off the sweep for Washington State.

The Cougars return to action April 18, in Seattle, against the No. 35 Washington Huskies in the final dual match of the season.
