USC Walks Off With 3-2 Win Over Oregon
April 9, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Freshman first baseman Ricky Oropesa (Rancho Cucamonga/Etiwanda HS) led off the ninth inning Thursday with a walk-off solo home run as the USC Trojans beat the Oregon Ducks, 3-2, in the first game of a Pac-10 Conference series. Oropesa went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Trojans won their season-high fourth straight game.
Daniel Cooper got his first win of the season after throwing a perfect eighth inning for USC (15-14, 5-4) in relief of starter Brad Boxberger who gave up two runs on four hits in eight innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. Boxberger had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings.
Mike O'Neill walked to lead off the Trojan fourth, moving to second on Grant Green's groundout. Anthony Vasquez then ripped an RBI double to right and later scored on Oropesa's RBI single to center as USC held the 2-0 lead.
Jett Hart recorded the first hit off Boxberger with a double to right in the sixth. Caleb Tommasini was hit by a pitch and Curtis Raulinaitis followed with a bloop single to center on the hit-and-run to make it a 2-1 score. Eddy Rodriguez tied it with an RBI single to right. Danny Pulfer walked to load the bases, but Boxberger struck out Mitch Karraker to halt the threat. The Ducks put runners at first and second in the eighth, but Boxberger again worked out of the jam as he struck out Pulfer.
After Cooper retired the side in order in the ninth, Oropesa launched a line drive over the fence in right for the game-winner.
The USC-Oregon series continues tomorrow with a 6:30 p.m. start (weather permitting) with a 1 p.m. series finale on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast through a live video webcast on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Oropesa's walkoff homer was the first one by a Trojan since March 25, 2007 (Lucas Duda vs. Arizona State)...Grant Green and Anthony Vasquez both extended their season-high hitting streaks to nine games...Green is batting .526 (20-for-38) while Vasquez is batting .421 during the streak...Green is now batting .394 overall...opponents are batting only .158 this season against Brad Boxberger...with Oregon resuming its baseball program this season, the Ducks made their first appearance at Dedeaux Field since 1974, the first year the stadium opened on the USC campus.
