Arizona Struggles on Day One of ASU Thunderbird Invitational

April 10, 2009

TUCSON, Ariz.-Arizona’s Men’s Golf Team shot a 582 (+14) in the first two rounds of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, held at the Karsten Golf Course, in Tempe, a par 71, 7,057 yard course.

ASU leads their home event by seven strokes. At 559 (-9), the Sun Devils are one of only two teams under par. Denver is the other, sitting at two under. TCU, the highest ranked team in the field at ninth, is in third following its 570 (+2) performance through the first two rounds. UC Irvine is in fourth, three strokes behind TCU. San Diego State was in second after the first round, trailing ASU by only three strokes, but fell to fifth following their second round score of 302 (+18).

The top four individuals all hail from ASU. The top player, Cameron Edens, is competing for the Sun Devils’ “B” team. Edens was tied for 25th to start the second round, but shot a 66 in the second round to take the lead. One stroke off the pace is Scott Pinckney at four under. Teammates Knut Borsheim and Stephan Gross are tied for third 139 (-3). Denver’s Chris Gilman and TCU’s James Sacheck are tied for fifth at two under.

Phil Bagdade and Tarquin MacManus are in an eleven man tie for 16th, one stroke over par. However, because Bagdade is competing as an individual, his score does not count towards Arizona’s total. Rich Saferian was one under after the first round, but carded a 75 (+4) in the second round to drop him 18 places down the leader board; he is now tied for 35th. At five over, Jonathan Khan is tied for 50th. Tyler Neal shot a 149 (+7) on day one, tying him for 67th. Brad Nicholson is one stroke behind Neal. Nick Park and Kenji Hernandez, each competing as individuals, are in 93rd and 95th, respectively.
