Bears Tied for 6th after 36 Holes at Thunderbird

TEMPE, Ariz. - The California men's golf team had another uneasy start with Friday at Karsten Golf Course but rallied to end the two-round day in a tie for 6th place, with the final 18 holes set for Saturday. Cal was tied for 15th at after 18 holes and climbed nine spots to stay in the hunt. Live scoring for the final round will be available at www.Golfstat.com.
John Murphy sank 3 birdies on the first 18, then ratcheted his game up farther with 3 birds and an eagle of the front 9 of his second round en route to five birdies and a two-round total of 142 (E, T11).
Stephen Hale got off to the best start for the Bears on Friday, playing even-par golf throughout most of the first round other than a double bogey on 15. He then sank 3 birdies on the front 9 of his second round and finished with four birds against four bogeys and a tie for 27th overall (+2)
George Gandranata dug himself a hole early in the first round with a triple-bogey 6 on the 6th hole, but turned things around in round two starting with a birdie and finishing even for the second round and +3 overall (T35).
Michael Jensen battled to right his first round, often trading under/over-par holes, including back-to-back birds on 13 and 14 with bogeys sandwiched around them, and Eric Mina fought his was through see-saw fortunes, sinking birdies on 16 and 17 but double-bogeying the 18th to end round one, then bettering his score by two strokes as both ended the day at +6 (T59).
Host Arizona State, fielding two different lineups, led by three strokes after round one and stayed in first place after day one at -9.
