Erickson Deals Golden Bears 6-2 Loss

April 10, 2009

SEATTLE - Jake Rife hit a double and a home run and Jason Erickson turned in the longest start of the year by a Husky pitcher as the Washington baseball team beat California, 6-2, in a Pac-10 game Friday night at Husky Ballpark.

The Huskies, who also won the first game of the series on Thursday, improved to 13-19 overall and 3-5 in the Pac-10 while Cal dropped to 15-16 and 3-8 in league play.

Erickson, a senior from Bonney Lake, worked eight innings for the victory to go to 1-3 on the season. He gave up two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out seven. Only one Husky starting pitcher had gone as many as seven innings this season. Geoff Brown struck out three in the ninth to close it out.

Rife, the Husky DH, went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Husky slugger Kyle Conley continued to a hot week at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Washington got started in the second when Rife, a senior from Arlington, Wash., led off with his second home run of the season, slicing a ball the other way just inside the left-field foul pole.

The Huskies then broke the game wide open in the third, stringing together five hits to score five runs. After loading the bases on three hits, including a bunt and an infield dribbler, one scored on a fielder's choice groundball from Troy Scott.

Conley followed with a double to left to plate one more before Rife doubled off the glove of center fielder Brett Jackson near the wall in right-center, scoring another. Conley came in on a wild pitch, Rife crossed the plate on a Brett Wilcox sacrifice fly, and the Huskies led 6-0.

Cal, which had managed only one hit through the first three, broke through for two runs in the fourth, scoring on RBI singles from Blake Smith and Jeff Kobernus and cutting the UW lead to 6-2.

Golden Bears starter Brian Diemer (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits over three innings. Reliever Dixon Anderson kept the Huskies at bay after coming on to begin the fourth, limiting the UW to just one hit and one walk over his five innings.

The series concludes Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Live video will air on the Dawg Channel at
