TEMPE, Ariz. - Top-ranked Arizona State parlayed a five-run second inning into an 11-1 victory over Washington State in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Saturday.

The Sun Devils (25-7, 10-1 Pac-10), ranked No. 1 in three of the four major polls, received eight shutout innings from Josh Spence (7-0) with 10 strikeouts. Redshirt-sophomore Chad Arnold (3-2) took the loss for Washington State (14-15, 4-4 Pac-10).

Arizona State scored in every inning from the second through the fifth in building an 11-0 lead. Matt Newman, who finished 5-for-5 with five RBI, did the most damage with a two-run double in the second and a three-run home run in the third.

The Cougars did not advance a runner past second base until the ninth inning when junior Matt Fanelli doubled home freshman Kyle Johnson with two outs to avoid the shutout.

The series concludes, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.

Freshman Kyle Johnson singled in the ninth inning for his first-collegiate hit...junior Matt Fanelli collected a career-high three hits.
