Cougars Hold First Spring Scrimmage

April 11, 2009

PULLMAN - Cougar running backs shined in Washington State's first scrimmage of Spring Football Saturday at Martin Stadium, combining for 189 yards on 25 carries.

'The running backs have some very good competition there right now,' WSU Head Coach Paul Wulff said. 'It's tough in practices, when you're not live, for the running backs to completely shine. That's what's nice about the scrimmages and the live portions; it gives them some legitimacy there when it's live.'

Led by Dwight Tardy and James Montgomery, WSU's running backs averaged 7.6 yards per rush. Tardy picked up a team-high 63 yards on eight carries, including a long of 27 yards, while Montgomery rushed nine times for 61 yards and a 33-yard touchdown, WSU's longest play from scrimmage on the day. Logwone Mitz gained 32 yards on three carries, Marcus Richmond picked up 14 yards on four carries and quarterback Kevin Lopina rushed once for 19 yards.

'In practice you can't tell if a guy breaks an arm tackle and see how the run through contact,' Wulff said. 'It's nice to see guys making people miss and gaining extra yards.'

Lopina and fellow quarterback Dan Wagner each threw a touchdown pass during the scrimmage, and neither threw an interception. Lopina completed 4-of-6 passes for 33 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown pass to tight end Skylar Stormo. Wagner went 1-of-4, hitting wide receiver Randy Johnson for a 25-yard scoring strike.

Five different Cougar receivers hauled in passes during the scrimmage. In addition to Johnson and Stormo's touchdown catches, tight end Zach Tatman (one reception for 18 yards) and wide receivers Johnny Forzani (one catch for four yards) and Kevin Norrell (one catch for three yards) each caught a pass.

Nico Grasu converted 5-of-6 field goal attempts, while Patrick Rooney went 2-of-5. Grasu nailed kicks from 37, 44, 47, 48 and 53 yards, while Rooney successfully converted from 39 and 48 yards.
