USC Completes Sweep Over Oregon, 9-1

April 11, 2009

LOS ANGELES - Junior right-hander Robert Stock allowed just one unearned run in eight innings while striking out 11 on Saturday as the USC Trojans won their sixth straight and complete the Pac-10 Conference series sweep in a 9-1 win over the Oregon Ducks. Stock allowed only five hits and walked one batter to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Mike O'Neill (Riverside/Poly HS) recorded his first career three-RBI game, going 2-for-3 at the plate while freshman right fielder Alex Sherrod (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS) went 3-for-4. Junior All-American shortstop Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) continued his torrid hitting with a 2-for-5 clip with a triple and two RBI for USC (17-14, 7-5).

Alex Keudell took the loss for Oregon (12-20, 2-7) after giving up five runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work. Caleb Tommasini led the Ducks with two hits.

Billy Pinkerton singled with one out in the third and advanced to third on Sherrod's single. Joe De Pinto then laid down a sacrifice bunt to score USC's first run of the game. Paul Eshleman reached base in the Oregon fifth on a two-base error by Green and scored on KC Serna's RBI single to center to tie the game at 1-1.

The Trojans took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth. De Pinto doubled down the third base line and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ricky Oropesa. O'Neill, who had reached on a walk, made it a 3-1 score on Keith Castillo's RBI groundout. Three-run innings in the seventh and eighth salted the game away for the Trojans, who allowed just six runs in the series.

USC returns to action on Tuesday (April 14) at home against Cal State Fullerton at 6:30 p.m. before a road game at Pepperdine on Wednesday (April 15) at 3 p.m. and a Pac-10 series at Oregon State, Friday-Sunday (April 17-19).

Notes: With his 19th career triple, Grant Green moved into a tie for seventh on the Pac-10 Conference all-time list for triples, tied with Mark Davis (Stanford), Dwight Taylor (Arizona) and Mike Codiroli (Stanford)...Green extended his hitting streak to 11 games, batting .489 (23-for-47) during the three starts this season, Robert Stock has allowed just five earned runs in 22 innings for a 2.05 ERA, walking six and striking out 28 batters...Anthony Vasquez had his hitting streak snapped at 10 games...the Trojans' current six-game winning streak is the longest since a similar six-game win streak in 2006 (February 7-17)...the longest win streak before then was a stretch of eight straight wins in 2002.
