USC Women Secure Rights To First-Ever Pac-10 Title
April 11, 2009
TEMPE, ARIZ. - The No. 9 USC women's tennis team fought through rainy skies and a tough No. 25 Arizona State squad to make some history for the Women of Troy thanks to a 4-2 win over the Sun Devils on Saturday in Tempe. As the Pac-10's only undefeated team with just one match left in the regular season, USC has secured at least a share of the Pac-10 team title - a feat never before achieved by the Women of Troy. Now boasting a 19-2 overall record and riding an 11-match win streak, USC will take its 7-0 Pac-10 record up against crosstown rival UCLA on Friday (April 17) at 3 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
USC and ASU put off doubles play due to impending wet weather, opting to play out singles first for today's Pac-10 clash. Rain continued to interrupt the matches throughout, leaving #26 Amanda Fink's deciding match at the No. 3 position hanging in the balance late in the decisive third set. After another break in play, Fink finished off ASU's Laila Abdala to capture the senior's 16th straight singles win and clinch the match for the Trojans. Fink's 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 comeback win put USC up 4-2 and locked down the historic conference crown for the Women of Troy.
Also picking up crucial singles wins for the Trojans in the match were #18 Maria Sanchez, #65 Alison Ramos and Leyla Entekhabi. Sanchez's win may have highlighted the match, as the sophomore upset the nation's #3 player Kelcy McKenna with a solid 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 1 position. Entekhabi served up a straight-set win of her own with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Sianna Simmons at No. 6, and Ramos aided USC's cause by pulling through with a three-setter to take down Michelle Brycki 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 at the freshman's No. 5 slot.
ASU was able to grab points at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions in the match. #53 Nadia Abdala beat out USC's #33 Sarah Fansler 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, and #92 Micaela Hein was able to top #68 Gabriela Niculescu at No. 4, but it was not enough to hold off the Women of Troy in their push for a Pac-10 crown.
