Sun Angel Classic Final Results

The Wildcats traveled up north for a day to take part in the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State at Joe Sellah Track in tempe, Ariz. on Saturday.  Fourteen athletes earned NCAA West Regional qualifications as the team completed yet another successful week early in the outdoor season.

Senior Jordan Powell dominated the long jump competition for the men on Saturday, winning the event with a regional qualifying jump of 7.54m (24-9).  The mark makes Powell one of only two athletes on Saturday to earn their first regional qualification of the season.

In the 'premiere' section of the event - one reserved for the top long jumpers in the competition - senior Luis Rivera-Morales took second place and first among collegiate athletes with his jump of 7.59m (24-11).  Rivera-Morales has already jumped 7.78m this year and solidifed a bid to the NCAA Regional.

Another first time qulaifier came from sophomore Jaci Perryman in the women's pole vault.  Perryman - who qualified for the NCAA Regional last season - set a person record Saturday while winning her section of the pole vault with a jump of 4.00m (13-1 1/2). Senior Gabriella Duclos took second in the event in her section with the same jump of 4.00m.

In the men's hammer throw event, freshman Tomaz Bogovic continued his personal record spree, setting his third one in as many competitions with a seventh place, 62.87m (206-03) effort in the event.  Barring results from other competition across the country this weekend, that mark would put Bogovic in the top-20 nationally in the event.

Also in the throwing events, senior Zack Lloyd fell just shy of ASU's Ryan Whiting in the shot put event with his best mark of 19.55m (64-1 3/4).  The battle between Lloyd and Whiting will be one that everyone should start getting used to as they are arguably the best two shot putters in the nation and will face off many times throughout the season, including a likely match-up in the NCAA National Championships.  Whtiing won the event with his final throw of the day, going for 19.61m (64-4) to edge Lloyd.

Continuing with the success of the UA throwing team, senior Megan Howard earned regional qualifications in both the shot put and hammer throw events.  Howard took fifth in the shot put with a regional qualifying mark of 15.39m (50-6) and coupled that with an early sixth place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 55.37m (181-08).  Fellow senior Nicole Lloyd also earned a regional qualifcation by placing fourth in the shot put with her mark of 15.65m (51-4 1/4).

In the running events, the men's 4x100-meter relay team of Xiong Xuehan, Chris McSwain, Kyle Alston and Chris Titsworth earned their first regional qualification of the year with a fourth place finish in the event in a time of 40.56.  The UA 4x100-meter team earned All-American honors in 2007 and went to the NCAA National Championships last season and will look the continue that success this season.

Titsworth also earned his first regional qualification of the year in the men's 400-meter hurdles, finishing seventh in a time of 52.51, matching the NCAA regional qualifying time exactly.  Titsworth was an All-Region performer last season and currently sits seventh all-time at Arizona in the event.

The Wildcats will be back in action next week at the annual Mt. Sac meet in Walnut, Calif. - typically regarded as one of the biggest meets in the country.
