I Need a Vowel Guy has Big Day
April 13, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. -
Junior receiver Casey Kjos had an impressive day, in what was considered not the greatest of days of practice by head coach Mike Riley. But, Kjos (pronounced Choh-ss) caught two touchdowns passes in the team’s “red ball” drill, one from Sean Canfield and one from Ryan Katz.
“It was just okay (practice); we can do better than that,” Riley said. “It always ebbs and flows with the more installation of stuff – it holds back the speed of practice.”
What practice is showing is the continuing growth of quarterbacks Sean Canfield and Ryan Katz while Lyle Moevao, who no longer sports a sling, is out all spring while rehabilitating from shoulder surgery. Katz made some nice tight spirals again today and it caught the eye of Riley.
“He (Katz) is really getting his first opportunity to run our offense, and it’s been good for him,” Riley said. “But, there again, there will be an ebb and flow for him as all of our quarterbacks get overloaded with stuff in the spring.”
It was a busy day for the quarterbacks from a media standpoint as Katz was a guest on the Joe Beaver Show Monday and Canfield spoke with Ted Miller of ESPN.com.
Canfield and Jacquizz Rodgers spent some time together in practice with Riley working on routes. Quizz made some impressive over the shoulder deep receptions early in practice and figures to be more involved in the passing game.
And finally, Coach Riley and the football program express their condolences to the family of former Pac-10 Coach of the Year Bruce Snyder, who passed away earlier today.
“He was certainly very special to all of us,” Riley said. “He’s a guy who dedicated his life to his family and football; a very special man.”
Media today included Paul Buker from The Oregonian, Cliff Kirkpatrick from the Gazette Times, Nick Krupke from KVAL and Derek Deiderich from KEZI, plus representatives from Rivals.com and Scout.com.
The team returns to practice Wednesday at 2:45 p.m.
