Cal Baseball Wins, 21-4, at UC Davis

DAVIS, CALIF. - Sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn hit two, three-run homers and the Golden Bears pounded out 22 hits as Cal defeated UC Davis, 21-4, Wednesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium in Davis. The Golden Bears, snapping an eight-game losing streak, improved to 16-18, while the Aggies dropped to 6-25. Cal also had big days from sophomore first baseman Mark Canha (2-for-4, home run, two RBI), junior second baseman Jeff Kobernus (3-for-5, double, home run, four RBI) and junior designated hitter Blake Smith (2-for-4, home run, three RBI). Redshirt freshman Chad Bunting also had a pinch-hit two-run homer in the eighth inning.

Guinn finished the day 5-for-7 with six RBI, hitting the first home runs of his collegiate career. Cal's 21 runs were the most since topping Loyola Marymount, 21-9, March 15, 2008 at Evans Diamond.

The winning pitcher for the Bears was freshman right-hander Matt Flemer (3-2, 3.0 innings, two hits, three runs, one walk, three strikeouts), who had replaced sophomore starter Brian Diemer (4.0 innings, three hits, one run, three walks, three strikeouts) in the fifth inning.

Cal scored four runs in the first inning off of UC Davis starter Nathan Slater (0-2, 2.2 innings, six hits, six runs, four earned runs, four walks, one strikeout). Kobernus had a two-run double down the left field line, freshman right fielder Danny Oh had an RBI single on a drag bunt and Smith had an RBI single through the right side.

The Bears added two more runs in the third inning when Aggie center fielder Daniel Cepin dropped a ball hit by sophomore left fielder Dwight Tanaka, allowing Smith and junior catcher Dylan Tonneson to score. Canha led off the fourth inning with a home run to left center field. Later Smith hit a two-run homer to right center field, junior center fielder Brett Jackson had an RBI single and Guinn had his first three-run homer to left field to make the score, 13-0.

UC Davis scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kyle Mihaylo walked with the bases loaded to force inTy Kelly. The Aggies tallied three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Joseph Medeiros' three-run homer.

Cal put on five more runs in the sixth inning when Guinn hit his second three-run homer of the day and Kobernus hit a two-run homer. The Bears added a run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Canha, and two runs in the eighth inning on Bunting's two-run homer to make the score 21-4. Bunting is 2-for-7 on the year with both of his hits being home runs.

Cal will next return to Pac-10 play when it hosts Oregon, beginning Friday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Ducks are in their first year of fielding a baseball team since the school dropped the sport following the 1981 season.
