Cal Hosts Beavers on Sunday in Redwood Shores

California opens Pac-10 dual action when it hosts Oregon State this Sunday, April 19, in Redwood Shores, Calif. The Golden Bears' top-ranked varsity 8+ will face the 15th-ranked Oregon State varsity 8+ at 9:40 a.m. followed by the open 8+ race at 10 a.m. The novice 8+ race is slated to start at 10:20 a.m.
Bears Win 3 of 4 Grand Finals at San Diego Crew Classic
Cal won three of four grand finals on April 5 to finish off their two days in the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay. In the Copley Cup varsity 8+ race, California rowed to a time of 5:51.8 to edge then top-ranked Washington, 5:52.61.
The Bears' second varsity 8+ took another win from second-place Washington, 6:06.92-6:6:11.02, in the Sharp Cabrillo Cup grand final.
Cal's novice 8+ clocked a time of 6:18.88 in the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup grand final to take second behind the Huskies, which rowed a 6:09.13.
The open 8+ or Joan Ward Memorial Trophy grand final proved successful for the Bears with a time of 6:30.7, with the Ltl Knights taking second in 6:36.23.
Oregon State Faces Tough Trio in Bay Area
Prior to meeting Cal on Sunday, Oregon State will race against Wisconsin and the Badgers' No. 2 varsity 8+ on Friday and face Stanford and the Cardinal's No. 5 varsity 8+ on Saturday, with both duals set for Redwood Shores.
The Beavers last saw the Bears in the San Diego Crew Classic, in which Cal topped Oregon State boats in three races. OSU placed third in a time of 6:14.17 in the petite final of the Copley Cup, while Cal won the grand final of the varsity 8+ race. In the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup or freshman 8+ grand final, OSU finished fifth in 6:38.67 compared to Cal's second-place finish. The Bears won the Joan Ward Memorial Trophy grand final, with OSU's open 8+ taking fourth in 6:59.98.
