Pepperdine Taxes USC With 8-5 Victory

April 15, 2009

MALIBU, Calif. - Colin Rooney's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the eighth provided the eventual game-winning run Wednesday as the Pepperdine Waves beat the USC Trojans, 8-5, in a non conference game. The game featured six errors by USC while Pepperdine stranded 11 runners, threw six wild pitches and hit into four double plays.

Nick Gaudi threw two scoreless innings in relief to get the win for Pepperdine (21-14) as the Waves swept the two-game series with the Trojans (17-16). Matt Bywater and Bryce Uhrig also kept the Trojans off the scoreboard with 2 1/3 scoreless innings each.

Nate Johnson went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Pepperdine while Ryan Heroy and David Harris recorded two hits as well.

Anthony Vasquez took the loss for USC, allowing three runs in the eighth. Ricky Oropesa and Mike O'Neill had two hits each for the Trojans.

Pepperdine scored an unearned run on the first when a fielding error by Oropesa allowed Bryce Mendonca to score from second.

Billy Pinkerton hit a one-out single in the USC second and advanced to second base after Robert Stock was hit by a pitch. Garret Houts then hit a two-run double to right center for a 2-1 Trojans' lead. The Waves retook the lead, scoring a single run in the second, third and fourth innings.

The Trojans took the lead in the fifth with three runs for the 5-4 advantage. Grant Green hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Houts, who led off the inning by being hit by a Tyler Hess pitch. Oropesa then delivered the game-tying RBI double to right and back-to-back wild pitches by reliever Jonathan Harmston scored him.

Johnson tied it quickly for the Waves with a solo homer to left in the fifth. Brian Humphries singled with an out in the eighth and Mendonca walked. A double steal moved up both runners before Nate Simon was intentionally walked to load the bases. Rooney lifted a fly ball to right to score Humphries and back-to-back singles from Johnson and Heroy capped the scoring.
