April 15, 2009

Box Score

Corvallis, Ore. – Strong pitching by junior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) and freshman Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) wrapped up another sweep of Portland State in 2-1, 2-0 decisions on Wednesday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.

I thought the pitchers did a great job today,” Walker said. “They only gave up one run over 14 innings and that was unearned. Both pitchers did a good job holding down a solid Portland State lineup.

With a pitchers’ duel taking place in the second game, Dyer came out on top, retiring 14 straight heading into the seventh inning. Giving up one hit, Dyer

The Beavers (22-19) picked up their first run in the bottom of the second after senior Stefanie Ewing (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned a leadoff walk, advancing to second on a groundout before scoring on sophomore Erin Guzy’s (Beaverton, Ore.) fourth double of the season.

Adding an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, senior DeAnn Young (Camarillo, Calif.) tallied her 12th RBI on the season with her hit up the middle to score freshman Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, Alberta) from second. Luchanski was pinch running for Ewing, who led off the inning with a single.

Dyer picked up the complete game shutout, her fourth of the season, striking out six, and picking up her 10th win of the season.

Vikings pitcher Tori Rogers gave up five hits and both runs were earned in the complete game effort. Centerfielder Jackie Heide and first baseman Jana Rae Slayton tallied the only Portland State hits.

Oregon State picked up the win in the first game behind Roderfeld and Guzy’s RBI, both coming in the third inning.

Chisholm earned her first hit on a double down the left line to lead off the inning before advancing to third on a passed ball. Chisholm scored on Roderfeld’s ground ball, being called safe at home on a catcher’s interference. With the bases loaded and two outs on the board, Guzy singled to left field to score Ewing

Freshman Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) earned the win after throwing six complete, fanning four, improving to 12-7. Dyer came in after a leadoff single in the top of the seventh to turn a double play before getting the final out on a fly ball to right field to tally her fourth save of the season.

Portland State’s Jamee Rauch went 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings’ effort. Pitcher Nichole Latham threw the complete game, giving up both earned runs, walking three and hitting four.

Oregon State continues its home stand on Friday against No. 3 UCLA at 3:00 p.m. The Beavers host No. 4 Washington on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 and 12:00 p.m.
