Husky Baseball Falls To Bruins, 4-2

April 17, 2009

LOS ANGELES - Freshman ace Gerrit Cole struck out 13 and allowed only one hit over eight innings to lead UCLA to a 4-2 win over the Washington baseball team Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Cole, who was selected by the Yankees in the first round of last June's Major League draft, improved to 3-3 on the season with the victory. He walked three and both of the runs scored against him were unearned. Gavin Brooks worked the ninth inning for his fourth save. He allowed two runners to reach base on a single and a walk, but closed out the game with the 4-2 lead in tact.

UW freshman starter Aaron West (1-1), who gave up two runs on four hits over four and one-third innings, suffered the loss.

The Bruins improved to 15-19 overall and 7-6 in the Pac-10 Conference while the Huskies saw their four-game win streak broken to fall to 14-20 and 4-6 in the league.

UCLA scored the game's first run in the second inning as Cody Decker doubled and eventually scored on a two-out single from Gabe Cohen, giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

Washington took advantage of a big two-out error to score two runs in the third inning. After Brett Wilcox was hit by a pitch, Brendan Gardner-Young laced a line drive off the shin of Cole for a double, putting runners at second and third with two outs.

Doug Cherry followed with a ground ball for what looked like the third out, but UCLA third baseman Chris Amezquita, despite the two outs, tried to run Gardner-Young back to second. After realizing the mistake, his throw to first to try and get Cherry sailed out of play, allowing two runs to score.

In the fifth, the Bruins drew even. After loading the bases on a double and two walks, Decker hit a hard grounder deep in the hole to short. The Huskies' attempt to turn the double play wasn't quite in time and Eddie Murray came across on the play, knotting the score at 2-2.

In the sixth, Amezquita led off with a single. After a bunt and a groundout moved him to third, Bruins catcher Steve Rodriguez snuck a ground ball single into right field, driving in the run to give UCLA a 3-2 lead. After another single put runners at the corners with two down, Casey Haerhter's pinch-hit single drove in another, making the score 4-2.

The Huskies and Bruins continue the series with games Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
