PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State belted four solo home runs and defeated Arizona 5-4 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

Senior Alex Burg, freshman Derek Jones and senior Greg Lagreid hit back-to-back-to-back bombs in the first inning to stake Washington State (17-16, 7-4 Pac-10) to a 3-0 lead.

Arizona (16-18, 3-11 Pac-10) scored twice in the third and once in the fifth to tie the game 3-3 before junior Michael Weber homered to right center in the sixth off Daniel Workman (1-1) and gave the Cougars a 4-3 lead. Weber's blast made a winner of Chad Arnold (4-2), who worked six innings, gave up three runs and struck out six.

'Chad (Arnold) gave us a quality start and Greg Lagreid called a great game like he always does,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'Our bullpen did a tremendous job against a dangerous offensive team and we found a way to win another close game.'

In the top of the seventh, junior Seth Harvey struck out Brad Glenn with two men on to stymie an Arizona threat and preserve the Cougars' one-run lead.

After WSU added a run on an error in the bottom of the seventh to go up 5-3, redshirt-junior Jeremy Johnson retired Dillon Baird, who had three hits in the game, on a fly ball with two men aboard to end the eighth.

With one out in the ninth, a misjudged fly ball and a single cut WSU's lead to 5-4, but Lagreid threw out Shaun Cooper trying to steal and Johnson punched out Glenn for his fifth save of the season.

The series concludes, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.

WSU NOTESThe back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning marked the first time since May 4, 2003 against Washington that the Cougars hit three-consecutive home runs...senior Jared Prince collected the 223rd hit of his career to move into a tie for 10th on WSU's all-time list.
