Cougars Hold Second Spring Scrimmage

PULLMAN - The Washington State offense showed another dimension in the second scrimmage of spring football Saturday at Martin Stadium, with Cougar quarterbacks hitting eight different receivers and completing 17-of-26 passes for 220 yards.

Redshirt senior quarterback Kevin Lopina completed 12-of-17 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. His 36-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Jared Karstetter was WSU's longest play of the day, and his touchdown pass, a strike to redshirt junior wide receiver Johnny Forzani, came from seven yards out. Lopina did not throw an interception on the day.

Redshirt sophomore Dan Wagner completed 5-of-9 passes for 58 yards, his longest a 31-yarder to tight end Skylar Stormo.

Karstetter and fellow sophomore Kevin Norrell were WSU's top receivers on the afternoon, with Norrell hauling in a team-high five receptions for 50 yards, and Karstetter posting four receptions for a team-high 66 yards.

After shining in the first spring scrimmage, WSU's ground game racked up 52 yards on 18 carries. Redshirt sophomore Logwone Mitz led Cougar running backs 25 yards on seven carries.

It wasn't all offense though. Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Dan Spitz intercepted a pass tipped by another redshirt freshman, defensive end Cory Mackay. Mackay had two batted passes on the day. Redshirt senior safety Xavier Hicks also intercepted a pass.

Junior defensive end Casey Hamlett, redshirt junior defensive tackle Josh Luapo and redshirt freshman defensive tackle Anthony Laurenzi each posted sacks on the afternoon.

The Cougars' final spring scrimmage will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday (April 25) in Martin Stadium.
