Giles Leads Troy At U.S. Intercollegiate

Sophomore Matt Giles' second-round 63 was one off the school record during a 36-hole 9-under performance to lead the No. 3 USC men's golf team on the first day of the 2009 U.S. Intercollegiate on Saturday (April 18) at Stanford (Calif.) G.C.

USC finished the two-round opening day in second at 15-under 545 (277-268), eight back of leader Washington, which finished first at 23-under 537 (267-270).

After opening with a 2-under 68, Giles blazed through the short Stanford course with a 7-under 63, one shot off of Rory Hie's school record 62. Giles, who had 12 birdies over 36 holes to finish second at 9-under 131, now has a team-best nine rounds in the 60s.

Sophomore Tim Sluiter is tied for ninth at 4-under 136 (69-67). He had five birdies during his first round and six in the second.

Senior Tom Glissmeyer and junior Jamie Lovemark are tied for 22nd at 1-under 139 after they posted identical rounds of 70 and 69.

Lovemark had seven birdies on the day and a second-round eagle on a par 5 while Glissmeyer had eight birdies, four in each round.

Freshman Steve Lim is tied for 35th at 140 (70-70), posting a pair of par rounds with seven birdies overall.

The competition concludes Sunday.
