UCLA's Bauer One-Hits UW In 13-0 Win
April 18, 2009
LOS ANGELES - For the second straight day, a UCLA freshman starter stymied the Washington baseball team's offense as Trevor Bauer one-hit the Huskies in a complete-game shutout for a 13-0 win in a Pac-10 game Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Huskies, who were held to only two hits in a 4-2 loss on Friday, fell to 14-21 overall and 4-7 in the Pac-10 while UCLA improved to 16-20 and 8-6.
Bauer, a right-hander, improved to 6-3 on the season with the victory. He walked two and struck out nine in his first collegiate complete game, facing only one batter over the minimum thanks to a pickoff and a double play.
Husky starter Jason Erickson (1-4) allowed six runs on eight hits over five-plus innings in the loss.
The Bruins drew first blood in the second inning. After a single and a hit batter, Gabe Cohen lined a double down the line into the left-field corner, scoring both runners. Cohen, who moved to third on a single, scored on a Justin Uribe sacrifice fly to give UCLA the early 3-0 lead.
In the fifth, Cody Decker scored on a two-out single from Chris Amezquita to make it a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, the Huskies were held hitless through the first five innings, getting only one aboard on a walk during that span. The UW managed its first hit when freshman catcher Brady McGuire led off the sixth with a single to left, but a double play erased him.
The Bruins got after it again in the sixth when Cohen belted a long, two-run homer to left, his second of the year, to make it a 6-0 lead.
In the seventh, the Bruins poured it on, scoring seven runs. After an RBI double fromTyler Rahmatulla and a two-run single from Eddie Murray, Blair Dunlap belted a grand slam to make it 13-0.
Cohen finished the day 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and four runs batted in to lead the Bruin batters.
The Huskies and Bruins conclude the series Sunday with 1:00 p.m. game, which will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
