UW Men's Eight Falls To No. 2 Wisconsin, Freshman Eight Remains Undefeated

April 18, 2009

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The No. 3 Washington men's rowing team raced a dual against defending national champion No. 2 Wisconsin that mirrored almost exactly last night's dual against No. 5 Stanford. The Huskies picked up wins in the second varsity eight and freshman eight races, but faltered in the varsity eight.

Sporting a re-tooled lineup, Washington's men's varsity eight lined up against defending national champion Wisconsin Saturday morning at Redwood Shores. Both crews started well, with Washington taking an early lead of nearly half a length. By the halfway mark, the race was almost dead-even. The Badgers made a move in the second half, pulling ahead of Washington. The Huskies rowed hard and made up some ground, with both crews staying close with 300 meters left to go. The Badgers pulled out the win by a little less than a length, giving Washington a sense of déjà vu.

'The challenge for our top boat is to find some synergy as a unit,' said head men's coach Michael Callahan. 'We experimented with the lineup of the top boat this weekend. We learned where we stand versus two of the nation's top programs and identified areas where we need to improve.'

'I was pleased with the effort and spirit of our student-athletes and our ultimate goal remains the same,' Callahan added.

In the second race, the Husky second varsity eight avenged the top boat's loss, downing the Badgers by a length. Washington's second boat went up early on Wisconsin and never relinquished its lead, crossing the finish in 5:42.0.

The UW freshman eight asserted its dominance again, taking an open water victory over Wisconsin by several lengths. The frosh got out to a strong lead early and raced well, defeating the Badgers by about 17 seconds to remain undefeated on the season.

'Overall, it was a positive weekend for Washington,' said Callahan. 'Our second varsity and freshman crews showed the depth in our program by winning both days of racing.'

The Huskies are back in action next weekend as they host longtime rival California at home on Montlake Cut at 9am. For the complete schedule and results, log on to GoHuskies.com..
