Beavers Face Tough Competition at Columbus Invitational

April 19, 2009

No. 12 Oregon State made a good showing this weekend in a two-day regatta against No. 8 Ohio State, No. 5 Michigan State and No. 4 Michigan at the Columbus Invitational. In a tough set of dual races, the Beavers gained positive experience racing against a fast set of teams, which will help them as the Pac-10 Championships approach.

'This was a great experience for our team,” head coach Emily Ford said. “We had the opportunity to square up against some of the best teams in the country and I think we held our own. We came here to race hard and learn more and we definitely accomplished that.'

All four of the Oregon State boats raced twice on Saturday with a morning session against Ohio State and an afternoon session against Michigan State. The Novice 8+ boat hit the water first in the morning session. The Buckeyes led the early charge, but the Beavers’ N8+ proved too much to handle as it crossed the finish line well ahead of Ohio State.

The Varsity 4+ boat also fought hard against both the “A” and “B” boats from Ohio State. The Buckeye “A” boat claimed the lead early in the race, but the Beavers challenged Ohio State decreasing its open water lead to only a couple seats by the end. Oregon State fell to the Buckeye “A” boat, but pulled across the finish line nearly 13 seconds ahead of the “B” crew.

The Second Varsity 8+ produced a close race against Ohio State, but could not fight off a strong surge and fell to the Buckeyes.

The last race of the morning session was the Beavers’ closest race against Ohio State. Although the Buckeyes were fast out of the start, Oregon State made a strong push to threaten the Buckeyes’ open water lead. The race was a fight to the end with Oregon State pulling across the finish just a second and a half behind Ohio State.

The Oregon State N8+ boat was also victorious in the afternoon session against Michigan State, claiming the win almost six seconds ahead of the competition. The Beaver V4+ boat also yielded similar results as the morning session claiming a second place finish in between the Michigan State “A” and “B” boats. It was a close race between the Beavers and the “A” as Michigan State held a less than 3-second lead at the end.

Both the V8+ and 2V8+ fell to Michigan State in the afternoon session to wrap up competition Saturday.

On Sunday, Oregon State kicked off the competition against Michigan with a tight race between the N8+ boats in the morning. Although the Beavers pushed until the end, they fell to the Wolverines by nearly three seconds, with the V4+ fairing much the same.

Both the V8+ and 2V8+ also fell to Michigan by margins of about seven seconds.
