Stanford Edged Out By Defending Champs From Wisconsin
April 19, 2009
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - The final day of racing at this year's Stanford Invitational promised to provide excellent racing and the performances did not disappoint.
The showcase race of the day saw the fifth-ranked Stanford Cardinal face off against the second-ranked, defending national champion Wisconsin Badgers. The two crews lined up on a perfectly calm day at Redwood Shores and proceeded to blister down the course.
The race stayed within three seats the entire way, but Wisconsin edged past Stanford right at the line to win by a margin of .32 seconds. Wisconsin clocked a time of 5:38.38 while Stanford raced in close behind at 5:38.70.
Stanford Director of Rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian saw a great deal to be happy with in the result.
'Racing the defending national champions to a photo finish was tremendous for our team morale and vision,' Amerkhanian said. 'We remain steadfast in our season goals of impacting the championship racing in May and June. Today we validated our quest and look forward to our journey.'
'Redwood Shores provided a great classroom for us this weekend,' he continued. 'UW, OSU and Wisconsin peer collaborated with us and provided essential lessons we will need to compete for a Pac-10 and national championship.'
In other races on the day, the Stanford frosh raced to a 2.04-second victory over Wisconsin by clocking a 5:57.12.
Frosh Coach Pete Giese was proud of the performance by the young Cardinal oarsmen.
'Today was a great day of frosh racing, frosh racing how it's supposed to be,' Giese said. 'Both Wisconsin and us have boats full of young, unproven athletes just learning to row and race at the collegiate level. To see these young men race with so much discipline and intensity was really a pleasure.'
The Stanford second varsity eight was also in action. The crew was defeated by Wisconsin, which finished the course in 5:48.57 while Stanford clocked at 5:59.07.
Stanford will next be in action at The Big Row against Cal on Saturday, May 2 at Redwood Shores.
