BOSTON, Mass. - The Stanford lightweight women completed a successful weekend in Boston on Sunday. Onthe Charles River in a 12 mph cross tail wind, No. 3 Stanford's eights and fours boats rowed to a sweep of the crews of No. 7 MIT.
The lightweight eight defeated the eight from MIT by 11 seconds Sunday. At the 1,500-meter mark Stanford held a three-second lead. During the second 500 meters, the Cardinal pushed the advantage out to open water, and continued to gain in the second 1,000 to finish in a time of 6:49 to MIT's 7:00.
'We took some positive steps today towards rowing better,' commented lightweight head coach Al Acosta. 'We still have a lot of work to do but we are very pleased with all the results from this weekend.'
In fours racing, the Cardinal lightweights held off an early challenge from MIT and gained most of the winning margin in the second 1,000 meters.
'I was proud of the girls for their efforts,' commented assistant coach Katie Sweet. 'They did a great job of working hard and staying together in the nasty conditions.'
The lightweights will return home as it prepares for the duals against California at Redwood Shores on Saturday, May 2.
