April 20, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Pacific-10 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of April 13-19:
Men's Track Athlete of the Week: BRANDON BETHKE, ARIZONA STATE (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif.). Bethke ran his first 5,000m outdoor race in nearly one year and clocked a time of 13:27.79, which bettered the previous ASU school record by nearly 10 seconds (was 13:37.71 by Aaron Aguayo in 2007) and also nearly one minute better than his previous personal best of 14:22.82 run last year. Currently, Bethke's time leads the NCAA and is the ninth-best in the world. It also stands as the second-best in the Pac-10 this year and the best among times recorded outdoors this season.
Men's Field Athletes of the Week: TRENT ARRIVEY, WASHINGTON STATE (Jr., Woodenville, Wash.). Arrivey cleared a lifetime-best and improved NCAA Regional Qualifying height of 7-feet, 4 1/2 inches (2.25m) as the top collegiate high jumper at the Mt. SAC Relays. His mark ties the fourth-best men's high jump mark in school history with Doug Nordquist (Pullman, 1981), and ties the national leader this season.
Women's Track Athlete of the Week: ANITA CAMPBELL, WASHINGTON (Jr., Vancouver, B.C.). Campbell ran a 15 second PR in the 5,000-meters at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday night, crossing the line in 15:45.85, which is the second-fastest time in school history, and ranks fourth in the NCAA this season. A three-time NCAA 5,000-meter competitor, Campbell had not run the distance outdoors since 2007. Campbell already ranked sixth nationally as well in the 10,000-meters.
Women's Field Athlete of the Week: MARISSA TSCHIDA, WASHINGTON STATE (So., Missoula, Mont.). Tschida threw the javelin a school-record distance of 175-feet, 11-inches (53.63m) to finish as the top collegian, and second overall in the women's university/open javelin at the Mt. SAC Relays, an elite field that included several recent Olympians. Her 175-11 toss is an improved NCAA Regional Qualifying mark by over 10 1/2 feet. Tschida shattered the WSU women's record of 169-7 (51.70m) thrown by Jenna Dean in 2005.
