UCLA's Trevor Bauer Captures National Player of the Week Honors
April 20, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz. - Freshman right-hander Trevor Bauer of the UCLA baseball team has earned Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors after having fired a one-hit complete game shutout in UCLA's 13-0 victory over Washington on Saturday, April 18.
Bauer became UCLA's first pitcher to throw a one-hit complete game since April 13, 1998, when Tony Righetti limited Hawai'i-Hilo to one hit in a 16-0 win at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The resident of Valencia, Calif., is the first UCLA player to earn Louisville Slugger's National Player of the Week honors since Feb. 20, 2006, two days after right-hander David Huff registered a career-high 15 strikeouts in UCLA's 5-1 victory at Pacific in the second game of a doubleheader on Feb. 18, 2006.
Bauer registered a career-high nine strikeouts in this first collegiate complete game, allowing just two walks and one hit. The freshman right-hander faced 28 hitters, one batter above the minimum, and did not allow any Washington players to advance past first base.
Bauer's bid for a no-hitter was snapped by the leadoff hitter in the top of the sixth inning with a single into left field. He retired the first 13 batters before issuing a one-out walk in the top of the fifth.
A former standout at Hart High School (Newhall, Calif.), Bauer has earned the victory in each of his five starts during his freshman campaign. Sporting a 6-3 overall record and 4-0 mark in Pac-10 games, Bauer leads UCLA's pitching staff with six wins, a 2.64 ERA and 61.1 innings.
Through Sunday's Pac-10 action, he ranks third in the conference in wins (six), fifth in innings (61.1), sixth in ERA (2.64) and strikeouts and 10th in opponent batting average (.225).
Bauer is joined on Louisville Slugger's National Player of the Week list by fellow right-handed pitchers Alex White (North Carolina) and Brett Eibner (Arkansas), both of whom also fired one-hit complete game shutouts last weekend. Minnesota's Derek McCallum and Marist's B.J. Martin were also named national selections.
