Cal Duals Washington on Saturday in Seattle

California faces Washington at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, on Montlake Cut in Seattle. The Golden Bears' third-ranked varsity 8+ will take on the Huskies' seventh-ranked varsity 8+ for the Simpson Cup, the trophy awarded annually to the winner of the Pac-10 rivals' varsity 8+ race. Under the leadership of Cal head coach Dave O'Neill, the four-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year including in 2008, the Bears have won the Simpson Cup six straight years.
Bears Wrap Up Lake Natoma Invitational with its Varsity 8+ Final, Group 1 Win
Cal's third-ranked varsity 8+ (6:20.56) edged No. 2 Stanford (6:29.41) and No. 16 Wisconsin (6:31.85) in its Group 1 final, leading to the Bears' overall Group 1 victory to wrap up the Lake Natoma Invitational, a two-day regatta it co-hosted with Sacramento State, on April 19. The Bears pulled away in Group 1 with 16 points, followed by Stanford (13) and Wisconsin (7).
Cal's second varsity 8+ (6:38.28) claimed second place after edging Wisconsin (6:39.42) at the finish, but fell short to first-place Stanford (6:32.77) in Group 1's second varsity 8+ final.
In the varsity 4+ Group 1 final, Cal (7:23.94) took the win from second-place Wisconsin (7:25.54) and third-place Stanford (7:42.62).
Central Florida (6:53.20) took first in the Group 1 novice 8+ grand final, followed by the Bears (7:00.38) and Sacramento State (7:10.93).
Scouting the Huskies
Washington last competed against Pac-10 rival Washington State on April 11 on Snake River in Pullman, Wash. The Huskies won all four races, though their varsity 8+ only beat the Cougars' top boat by 1.87 seconds, 6:42.96-6:44.83. UW's second varsity 8+ won, 6:45.91-6:51.04. The Huskies' A boat won the varsity 4+ race with a time of 7:35 to the WSU A boat's 7:45; the UW B varsity 4+ was third in 8:01 and the WSU B varsity 4+ was fourth in 8:07. The Huskies' novice 8+ won, 7:09.3-7:40.3.
Bob Ernst, the Washington's director of coaching and women's head coach, is in his 10th season overall as women's head coach at Washington. The veteran Huskies' coach previously coached the UW women from 1980 to 1987 and returned to the women's head coaching job last season.
