Huskies Struggle On Day One Of Pac-10 Championships
April 23, 2009
OJAI, Calif. - The UW men's tennis team was ousted from singles play on the first day of the Pac-10 Championships, held at Libbey Park at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. Sophomore Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan was upset in the Round of 16.
Nedunchezhiyan, the third-highest ranked player in the draw at No. 40, faced Cal's Zach Gilbert in the first round and won without any issues, 6-1, 6-2. Later in the day, however, Nedunchezhiyan couldn't get things going again against UCLA's Michael Look, who played No. 2 singles for the Bruins in the dual match against UW. Look won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Washington had five entrants in the Main draw, but their second and third singles players, Patrik Fischer and Martin Kildahl, both sat out the singles draw, so in many cases today a player from the lower half of UW's usual lineup was facing a No. 1 or No. 2 from another Pac-10 school.
In first round matches, sophomore Tobi Obenaus was matched up against top overall seed Robert Farah of USC, ranked seventh in the country, and made a strong first set showing before losing, 7-5, 6-0. Senior Ryo Sekiguchi lost 6-2, 6-4 to 67th-ranked Steve Johnson of USC, and fellow senior David Chu lost to Arizona's top player, 62nd-ranked Jay Goldman, 6-1, 6-3. Junior Derek Drabble split two tight first sets in his first round match with USC's Matt Kecki, but Kecki pulled away in the third for a 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 win.
In the Invitational draw, sophomore Skyler Tateishi was the only Husky to get a win, as he beat Arizona's David Humphreys, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round, but then lost to Oregon's Duncan MacDonald-Korth in three sets in the Round of 16.
Washington will look to bounce back with a strong showing in doubles starting Friday morning.
