Malovic Advances To Quarters In Pac-10 Invite

OJAI, Calif. - Junior Aleksandra Malovic earned a spot in the quarterfinals of the Invitational draw at the Pac-10 Championships today, earning two wins over players from Oregon and Arizona State. Malovic was the only Husky to win twice in singles play.
At the Ojai Valley Athletic Club, Malovic lost her first set of the day, 2-6, to Oregon's Stephanie MacFarlane, but then bounced quickly back with set wins of 6-0, and 6-1 to move on. She faced Ashlee Brown of ASU next and scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Tomorrow Malovic will face Stanford's Logan Hansen for a spot in the semis.
In the main draw, freshmen Denise Dy and Samantha Smith both won their first round match-ups with two Cougars, but fell in their second matches. Dy, ranked 76th, beat No. 1 WSU player Ekaterina Kamendova, 6-1, 6-1, but then lost to 27th-ranked Amanda Fink, a senior from USC, by a 6-3, 6-4 count. Smith earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over WSU's Aleksandra Cekic before falling, 6-2, 6-3 to Arizona's Natasha Marks in the Round of 16.
In other action, sophomore Lina Xu struggled against 28th-ranked Marina Cossou of Cal in the Main draw first round, losing 6-0, 6-1. In the Invitational draw, sophomore Aleksandra Krsljanin took UCLA's Carling Seguso to a first set tiebreak, but after Seguso got the breaker win, she rode the momentum to a 6-1 second set win as well.
Along with Malovic's quarterfinal match, doubles play also begins tomorrow at the Ojai.
