No. 28-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Marina Cossou secured a berth into the singles semifinal today at the 2009 Pac-10 Tennis Championships as the second-year Golden Bear produced a come-from-behind three-set victory over No. 14-ranked Yasmin Schnack of UCLA, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 on the courts of the Ojai Valley Tennis Club. Senior Marion Ravelojaona also got a singles win today as she took out Siobhan Cavan of Oregon, 6-2, 7-6, to advance to the semifinal of the women's invitational tournament.

No. 30-ranked senior Bojana Bobusic had also advanced to the championship singles quarterfinal but fell in a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Natasha Marks of Arizona. Cossou will draw Marks in tomorrow's (April 25) 11 a.m. semifinal. In the invitational tournament, freshman Stephany Chang's had her run stopped short in the quarterfinal round as well as she lost a 6-1, 6-0 decision to UCLA's Carling Seguso.

In the doubles championship, Cal's 26th-ranked tandem of Cossou and senior Claire Ilcinkas could not escape the round of 16 as they were narrowly edged in a tiebreaker, 7-4, by Ashley Joelson and Nina Pantic of UCLA. Bobusic and Chang fared better in the opening round as they took out Aleksandra Cekic and Ekaterina Kamendova of Washington State, 8-2. Bobusic and Chang continued to press and came close to knocking off No. 16-ranked Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein of Arizona State, but fell short in an 8-6 defeat. In doubles invitational play, Oregon's Siobhan Cavan and Stephanie MacFarlane were able to withstand the charge of Ravelojaona and freshman Catalina Visico as it turned away the Bear duo in an 8-5 victory.

Play resumes tomorrow (April 25) with semifinal matches in both singles and doubles. The remainder of the weekend's matches will take place at Libbey Park. The No. 8-ranked Bears (17-4, 7-1 Pac-10) completed the dual season on a six-match winning streak and await seeding into the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships.
