Dawgs Go Deep To Beat Ducks, 11-2

April 24, 2009

EUGENE, Ore. - The Washington baseball team used homers from Kyle Conley, Troy Scott and Jake Rife, along with a solid starting performance from freshman Aaron West, to beat Oregon, 11-2, Friday in a Pac-10 game at PK Park.

It was the Huskies' first trip to Eugene since the final day of the 1981 regular season, after which Oregon dropped its baseball program. The UW had won three of four non-conference meetings vs. the Ducks earlier this season.

West, a righty from Snohomish, improved to 2-0 with the win. He worked six innings, allowing one run on five hits. He walked three and struck out three, and was the beneficiary of three double-play groundouts, including one with the bases loaded to end the second.

Washington (16-22 overall, 5-8 in the Pac-10) jumped on the Ducks with a pair of long balls in the first inning. After a hit batter and a walk, Conley belted his league-leading 15th homer of the season to left-center, staking the Huskies with a 3-0 lead. Scott followed with a towering homer near the top of the lights in right field, his fifth, to make it 4-0.

In the second, Husky third baseman Julien Pollard led off with a single. After taking second on a bunt and third on a passed ball, he scored on a Brendan Gardner-Young single to make it 5-0.

The Dawgs added another two in the fourth, scoring on an RBI, ground-rule double from Caleb Brown and a sacrifice fly from Rife.

The Ducks (13-26 overall, 3-10 Pac-10), who had runners aboard in each of the first four, scored their first run in the fifth as Jett Hart led off with a triple and scored on a Caleb Tommasini grounder, making it a 7-1 Husky lead.

The Huskies added to their lead in the sixth when Rife lofted a three-run homer to right field, his fourth of the season. After the homer, Scott walked and scored on a double from Doug Cherry, making it an 11-1 game.

The Ducks scored an unearned run in the seventh when Josh Hogan reached on an error and scored on a single from Tommasini.

Ducks starter Alex Keudell (0-4) suffered the loss. In his two and one-third innings, he allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits.

The series continues with 1:00 p.m. games on Saturday and Sunday. Both games will air live both on KKNW AM-1150 and Comcast SportsNet television.
