Drabble And Kildahl Reach Pac-10 Doubles Semis
April 24, 2009
OJAI, Calif. - The Washington men's tennis team made a dent in the doubles draw today on day two of the Pac-10 Championship, as junior Derek Drabble and sophomore Martin Kildahl earned two big wins to advance to the Main Draw Semifinals.
Drabble and Kildahl, ranked 61st nationally, turned in a routine win in the morning session, 8-4, over Arizona's Jay Goldman and Pat Metham to advance to the quarterfinals.
Later in the day, the two came back out and scored an 8-5 upset over 18th-ranked Geoff Chizever and Pedro Zerbini, the No. 1 doubles team from California. That score was identical to just two weeks ago, when Drabble and Kildahl previously upset Chizever and Zerbini in the UW-Cal dual match in Seattle.
In Saturday's semifinal, the Huskies will face Stanford's 45th-ranked pair of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher. Drabble and Kildahl will be hoping for a repeat of the previous meeting between the two teams, when the Dawgs notched an 8-4 win in the Stanford dual match.
Drabble and Kildahl are now 14-4 on the season, alternating between the first and second doubles spot, but playing like an elite team now. Drabble has racked up 21 doubles wins overall this year, and needs two more to crack UW's single season Top-10 doubles wins list.
Washington had three other doubles teams in action today, but all three lost their opening matches. In the Main Draw, seniors David Chu and Ryo Sekiguchi lost, 8-5, to UCLA's Michael Look and Eugen Brazdil.
Match time for Saturday's doubles semi is approximately 3:30 p.m.
