Malovic Last Husky Standing In Ojai
April 24, 2009
OJAI, Calif. - Husky junior Aleksandra Malovic won again to reach the semifinals of the Invitational Draw at the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Championships today. Malovic is the lone Husky playing into the weekend at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
Things couldn't have gotten off to a worse start for the Apeldoorn, Netherlands native, as she lost the first set to Stanford's Logan Hansen, 0-6. Malovic would not fold up the tent, however, taking the second set convincingly, 6-2. The third set was the closest, but Malovic was able to score the 6-4 win and a berth in the semifinals, where she will face UCLA's Carling Seguso on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Doubles play started today at the Ojai, but UW's top tandem of Joyce Ardies and Denise Dy was unable to replicate their biggest win of the dual match season. Just a few weeks back, Ardies and Dy upset the 3rd-ranked UCLA team of Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack, 8-6, in Seattle. But the Bruins got even with the Huskies with an 8-2 win in the first round of the Main Doubles Draw this morning.
In the Invitational Doubles Draw, sophomore Lina Xu and freshman Samantha Smith had an opening round 8-3 win over Washington State's Elisabeth Fournier and Jessica Gomez. In the quarterfinals, however, UCLA's Maya Johansson and Anna-Viktoria Lind escaped with a 9-7 win over the UW pair.
Semifinals in all singles and doubles draws will take place tomorrow with the finals on Sunday.
