Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. - Freshman Dani Yudin drove in both Bruin runs on a two-run single in the sixth and junior Megan Langenfeld shut down the highest scoring offense in the nation, as second-ranked UCLA defeated #7 Arizona 2-1 on Friday at Hillenbrand Stadium.

The Bruins improve to 33-8 overall and 8-4 in Pac-10 play, while the Wildcats fall to 36-10 and 8-3 in league action.

Langenfeld tied a season high with eight strikeouts, improving to 9-0 on the season. She gave up one run, four hits and one walk. Sophomore Katie Schroeder went 2-for-4 and seven others had a hit apiece, with UCLA posting nine as a team.

The Bruins were threatening early and often, but stranded one in the first and two in the second, third and fourth. In the sixth, UCLA finally broke through with a pair of runs. Sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore led off with a double to center and junior Kaila Shull deadened a bunt attempt into the ground to the right of home plate, with the ball staying fair for an infield single to put runners at the corners. After a groundout by junior Julie Burney moved Shull to second, Yudin came through with a single up the middle to score DiSalvatore and Shull to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Brittany Lastrapes led off with a home run to cut the deficit to 2-1. But Langenfeld closed out the game to post the win. Besides the homer, the Wildcats never got a runner past first base. The junior pitcher struck out the side in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth, sixth and seventh. Langenfeld also benefited from some great defense behind her. Freshman Andrea Harrison made a pair of diving catches in foul ground in the fourth and fifth and Shull made a nice foul catch up against the backstop in the sixth.

Sarah Akamine (16-5) started for the Wildcats and allowed two runs, nine hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Jennifer Martinez retired all four batters she faced, fanning one. Lastrapes had two of the Wildcats' four hits.

The Bruins continue their road trip in Arizona on Saturday when they face Arizona State at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket in Southern California. You can also catch the contest on Gametracker at UCLABruins.com. There will be no audio broadcast.
