Huskies Eighth After Day 2 of Pac-10s

April 25, 2009

The University of Washington women's golf team is in eighth place after the second day of play at the Pac-10 Championship, shooting a collective 301 on Saturday.

Today's score, combined with a first-round 305 has the Huskies an 606 heading into the final day of play. Leading the way for the Huskies will be junior Molly Aronsson, who is at 5-over for the tournament (74-73 147) and in a tie for 12th place. But Aronsson won't be the only Husky looking for a spot in the top-10. Sophomore Anya Alvarez is 7-over and in a tie for 19th place. Both players moved up at least one spot with their play on Saturday.

'They've been our money players all spring for us, so that's nice to see them keep that up at Pac-10s,' said UW head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'They've been solid, solid, solid, and their game has just matured so much over the past few months.'

The Huskies again started the day well, at 4-under for a team through the first third of the round before letting such a start slip.

'That's sort of how we've played lately, with a good start -- and when you're 2-under, you want to get to 4-under, rather than protect it. And we've been playing to protect it,' Mulflur said.

Behind those top Huskies are Christina Yoon, who is 10-over and in a tie for 28th place. Karinn Dickinson is in 49th and Sadena Parks remained in 50th. With a solid round on Sunday, the Huskies could make quite the leap in the standings, with Stanford in fifth place and just 10 strokes away. Leading the tournament are the Arizona Sun Devils (293-281 574), who have three of the four players in a tie for first place in Carlota Ciganda, Azahara Munoz and Jennifer Osborn. Southern California's Jennifer Song is also in that tie.

The Huskies will continue play on Sunday, starting with Parks at 7:45 a.m. She is to be followed by Dickinson (7:53), Yoon (8:01), Alvarez (8:09) and Aronsson (8:17). Live scoring for the event is available at
