California Finishes Fifth at Pac-10 Championships

The California Golden Bears surged on the final day of play at the Pac-10 Championships, moving up the leaderboard for a fifth place finish. Sophomore Pia Halbig finished in eighth place among individuals.
The Bears posted a third-round team score of 284, dropping 21 strokes off their second round score. Halbig and senior Shannon Yocum each shot two-under 69's on their final 18 holes. Senior Allison Goodman was also under par, posting a 70.
The Bears started play on the tenth hole after starting on the first tee the previous two days. Halbig started slow, with bogies on 11 and 12, before logging birdies on the par-14 13 and par-3 14 to pull back to even par for the day. She birdied 17 before making the turn. She dropped to two under with a birdie on the par-5 first hole. She hit her fifth birdie of the day on her third-to-last hole, the par-5 7th. Halbig shot a two-under for the day and finished with a +2 overall, ranking eighth among the individual golfers.
Yocum, playing in her final Pac-10 Championship, lit up her second nine holes. Yocum also birdied her first hole after the turn, posting a four on the par-5 one. Yocum birdied five, six, and seven to end the day at two under. She finished the tournament at +6, ranking her in 12th place.
Goodman played a very steady round, posting zero bogeys. She birdied the par-4 13th for her one-under 70. She finished the tournament at +10.
Halbig, who was a second team All-Pac-10 selection last season, became the first Bear to earn first team honors since Sarah Huarte in 2004. It is the sixth time a Cal player has been named to the women's golf All-Pac-10 First Team.
Goodman and Yocum each earned honorable mentions for the All-Pac-10 team.This was the third honorable mention for Goodman and the second for Yocum.
Arizona State won the team championship with a nine stroke advantage over second-place USC. Carlota Ciganda of Arizona State won the playoff over Jennifer Osborn of Arizona State and Jennifer Song of USC on the first playoff hole.
The Bears await their fate, waiting to see if they will earn an invitation to the NCAA Regionals. Announcements of the post-season field will be released on Monday, April 27.
