Cats End Home Slate With a Blast(s)

TUCSON--Arizona took out its weekend frustration over some missing bats and pounded No. 3 Washington, 11-0, Sunday afternoon to close the Wildcats regular-season home schedule in five innings.

The Cats socked five home runs and collected 11 hits after losing a pair of games to UCLA and Washington Friday and Saturday with four safeties in each game.

No. 7-ranked UA kept up its Pac-10 title hopes, in improving to 9-4 and 37-11 overall. The Huskies dropped to 8-6 and 35-9.

Sarah Akamine (17-5) took care of business in the circle for UA, holding Washington to a a pair of hits through four innings. She struck out four. Senior Jennifer Martinez pitched the final inning in relief on the Cats' Senior Day.

The Wildcats snapped out of their funk in the first inning. Brittany Lastrapes led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and reached third when Jenae Leles dropped a single into right field. Stacie Chambers' ground ball brought her in. Sam Banister then knocked her 13th home run of the year for a quick 3-0 lead.

K'Lee Arredondo socked an RBI double after Lastrapes singled in the UA second. And then, left fielder Ashlyn Watson misplayed Leles' high sfly ball for an error that brought in Arredondo for an unearned run to make it 5-0.Marnie Koziol beat out an infield grounder to get Washington's first hit with two outs in the third, and moved to second on a wild pitch by Akamine. Jen Salling grounded out to end the threat.

Lini Koria hit her 11th home run of the year with one out in the UA third to push the lead to 6-0 and chase starter Jenna Clifton (2-2).

Kimi Pholman singled to lead off the Washington fourth and moved up on an infield grounder to put the Huskies' second runner in scoring position. Akamine got an infield fly off pinch-hitter Taylor Smith and got pinch-hitter Dani Stuart to fly out to center.

Lastrapes and Arredondo opened the UA fourth with home runs to make it 8-0. It was Lastrapes' 15th and Arredondo's eighth of the year. After walk to Leles and an infield single by Chambers, Clifton returned to pitch, replacing reliever Felecia Harris. Banister greeted her return with a three-run home run, her 14th and UA's 111th round-tripper.

After the game, a ceremony was held to honor the Cats' seniors -- Leles, Banister, Laine Roth, Jill Malina, Martinez and Mandy Monge, along with senior manaher Brian Eck.
