April 26, 2009
OJAI, Calif. -
California women's tennis senior Marion Ravelojaona completed her run at the 2009 Pac-10 Championships as the runner up in the women's singles invitational tournament today at Libbey Park. The fifth-year Golden Bear fell in straight sets to UCLA's Carling Seguso, 6-2, 7-5. Ravelojaona and Cal now look ahead to the NCAA championship as the Bears (17-4, 7-1 Pac-10) look to do one better than their national runner-up finish from a year ago.
ESPNU will air the official NCAA selection show this Tuesday, April 28, at approximately 2:20 PT. Last year, the Bears hosted two matches at the Hellman Tennis Complex and defeated Army and Louisiana State to advance to the championship round of 16 in Tulsa, Okla. There, Cal took out Duke, top-ranked Northwestern and Baylor to face UCLA in the national championship match.
The Bears will carry five players ranked in the top 60 into this year's team competition including No. 10-ranked freshman Jana Juricova. Sophomore Marina Cossou holds the No. 28 singles ranking with senior Bojana Bobusic sitting tight at No. 30. Sophomore Mari Andersson is ranked No. 35 and senior Claire Ilcinkas checks in at No. 54. Cal also has four doubles teams ranked in the top 90 in the nation including No. 5 Andersson and Juricova and No. 26 Cossou and Ilcinkas. The Bears head into the championship riding a season-high six match winning streak.
