Coe and Broom Named Pac-10 Athletes of the Week
April 27, 2009
BERKELEY - Sophomore Michael Coe and junior Kimyon Broom were named two of the four Pac-10 Athletes of the Week, as announced by the conference today. They earned the honors after each set school records last Saturday at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. This is the second and third Pac-10 Track Athlete of the Week awards for Cal in 2009. Junior thrower Ryan Young was the first Bear to win the award earlier this season.
Coe broke the school record in the mile and set the fastest collegiate, U.S. and third-fastest time in the world this season with a time of 3:56.18. Coe surpassed David Torrence's record time of 3:58.62 for the school record. Torrence took second in the race at 3:57.04. The previous NCAA-best time was 4:01.38 and the previous best U.S. time was 3:58.90. That time converts into a nation-leading 3:37.98 at 1500 meters. In addition, Coe's mile time ranks seventh best all time in Pac-10 history and is the third fastest time in the past 20 years.
Broom set the school record in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 13.08 surpassed her previous school record-setting time of 13.17, which she set in the prelims at the Pac-10 Championships last year. The time currently leads the Pac-10 and ranks seventh in the NCAA this season.
Cal heads to the Farm this Saturday for the Payton Jordan Invitational.
