WSU to head to K-State for 2009 Big 12/Hardwood Series

April 27, 2009

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State University men's basketball will take on Kansas State Saturday, Dec. 5 in Manhattan, Kan., in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series, the two conferences announced Monday.

The Cougars are 1-1 in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series which is in its third year. In the inaugural year, WSU defeated Baylor, 67-64, Nov. 30, 2007 in Waco, Texas. In the return game this past season, the 24th-ranked Bears defeated the Cougars, 58-52, Dec. 6 in Pullman. The Wildcats are 0-2 in the Hardwood Series, having fallen to Oregon each of the last two seasons.

WSU is 2-2 all-time against Kansas State having won the last meeting, 58-57, Dec. 3, 2005 in Pullman. A year prior, in the first game of the home-and-home series, K-State came out on top, 62-53 in Manhattan, Nov. 27, 2004. The Cougars are 10-15 all-time against current members of the Big 12 as they have not faced Iowa State or Oklahoma. Both the Cougars and the Wildcats participated in the NIT this season as WSU finished 17-16 and KSU finished with a 22-12 mark.

The majority of the 12 games in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood series are scheduled from Dec. 3-6, with just three taking place outside the four-day series window. The series features new matchups in 2009 after two-straight campaigns of home-and-away meetings. In 2010 the contests will be return games, taking place between Dec. 2-5.

Last season, the two leagues split the Hardwood Series outings, 6-6. In all games played between the two conferences during 2008-09, the Big 12 held a 10-7 edge. The Pac-10 holds a 13-11 advantage in the first two years of the Hardwood Series. A season ago, the 12 contests averaged more than 10,000 fans and in two years games from the event have seen 244,029 fans go through the turnstiles.

Additional components of the series, including the start times and television broadcast information will be announced at a later date.
