The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee selected the 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams that will compete in the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships today. The No. 19-ranked California men's tennis doubles team of senior Geoff Chizever and sophomore Pedro Zerbini received one of 17 at-large selections to the 32-team doubles field and will travel to College Station, Texas. The championships will be conducted May 20-25 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 14-19). Texas A&M University will serve as the host institution.

All matches will be best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches. Automatic qualifications into the Division I doubles championship was awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applied the NCAA selection criteria in order to determine which doubles team was the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams had to have a record of a minimum of 10 completed matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.

Chizever and Zerbini completed the regular season with a team-high 24-11 doubles record. The duo posted a 12-7 record on the top court in duals and helped the Golden Bears win the doubles point in 14 matches this year. The tandem is the first Cal doubles team to be selected to the NCAA championship since Balazs Veress and Patrick Briaud were taken in 2004. The two fell in three sets in the first round to a team from Clemson.

No. 40-ranked Cal (11-10, 2-4 Pac-10) received its school-record 10th-consecutive bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships and will face No. 17-ranked Pepperdine (19-9) in a first round match at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 8, at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
