GymDawgs Hand Out Year-End Awards

SEATTLE - The 2009 gymnastics team officially put the season in the books by celebrating a successful season, in which the Huskies recorded their highest Pac-10 finish in six years, beat a long-time rival for the first time in six years and saying goodbye to one of the most talented gymnasts to come through the program in several years.

The GymDawgs held their annual awards banquet on Sunday, April 26 at Maggiano's Little Italy in Bellevue, Wash., taking the opportunity to hand out several awards and say goodbye to the team's three seniors.

The class of 2009 raked in the awards with senior Ashley Houghting earning the coveted Creating Winners In Competition (MVP) award for her consistent excellence this season. Houghting also earned the Event Specialist award for her work on floor and vault. Houghting earned a 9.900 or above on vault six times this season and a 9.900 or above four times on floor.

Kelly Gilbert was awarded the Creating Winners In Life award for her persistently upbeat attitude leadership. The senior from Phoenix, Ariz. also earned the Team Spirit award for her love and support of the Huskies. Gilbert was also named the Pac-10 All-Academic second team.

Fellow senior Kristen Omori took home the Creating Winners In The Classroom academic award for her 3.56 cumulative GPA. Omori, who will earn a dual degree in Environmental Science and Aquatic and Fishery Science, was also named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team. Omori was also named the 101 Club Scholar Athlete and earned the prestigious Arthur Ashe Junior Sports Scholar Award, given annually to athletes who excel in their sport, in the classroom and in community service.

Sophomore Kristen Linton earned the Most Improved award for averaging higher scores this season than last season. Linton's season average on the bars shot up to 9.790 this year. Linton has scored a 9.700 or above on bars in six meets this season and a 9.700 or above on the floor in all but two meets this season. The Edmonds, Wash. native won three titles on the uneven bars this year and finished the season ranked No. 67 in the country in the event.
