Schnack, Remynse, Abid Selected for NCAA Individual Championships

April 30, 2009

LOS ANGELES - Selections for the 2009 NCAA Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships were announced on Wednesday, and UCLA had two women's players and one men's player selected for the tournament, which is scheduled to run from May 20-25 in College Station, Texas.

On the women's side, Bruin junior Yasmin Schnack and sophomore Andrea Remynse have both been selected to participate in the 64-player singles draw. Schnack, who is ranked No. 15 in the latest Campbell's/ITA Singles Rankings, is a 9-16 seed in the event. The two players are also doubles partners and have earned a No. 3 seed in the 32-team doubles draw.

Schnack and Remynse are vying to become the school's first NCAA singles champions since Keri Phebus accomplished the feat back in 1995. UCLA's last NCAA doubles title came just a year ago, as Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda became the sixth team in school history to win the title.

Junior Haythem Abid was selected as one of the 48 at-large selections to participate in the 64-player men's draw. In addition to Abid, one other Bruin player has a chance at getting in the draw, as junior Matt Brooklyn is currently No. 6 on the alternate list. UCLA did not have any men's doubles teams selected to compete.

UCLA's last NCAA singles champion on the men's side was Benjamin Kohlloeffel in 2006.

The draws for the individual championships will be released sometime during the team tournament (May 14-19).
