The USC men lead 40-35 in the all-time competition between the two schools, while the UCLA women hold a 21-4 advantage. Last year, the USC women defeated UCLA 86-77 to snap a 15-season losing streak to its rival, while the Trojan men fell 89-74.

An added incentive in this year's battle is that the Lexus Gauntlet competition between the two schools could also be decided on the track, as USC will enter the day with a 50-45 lead in the year-long competition. Earlier on Saturday (May 2), USC and UCLA will face off in women's rowing with 5 points on the line and each of the track competitions (men and women) have 5 points on the line. If the Trojans can get to 60 points they will win the 2009 Lexus Gauntlet competition and maintain the trophy.
