Bruin Men Fall To USC In Track & Field Action

The USC men reclaimed the dual meet crown on Saturday as the Trojans defeated the Bruins 92-71 in track and field action. Despite the loss, the Bruins posted several regional marks, swept the steeple and 5000m and posted seven event wins.

The women's team also lost to USC marking the first time in UCLA/USC dual meet history that both the men's and women's teams have lost to USC in the same year.

Sophomore Dylan Knight led a sweep in the steeple as he ran a season-best and regional qualifier of 8:53.61 to win. His time ranks 19th in the NCAA this season. Junior Marco Anzures was second with a lifetime-best and regional run of 9:04.82 (previous best 9:13.02). Junior Jake Matthews rounded out the sweep in third in a time of 9:20.80.

In the 5000m, sophomore Kent Morikawa finished first in a time of 14:35.92, freshman Mohamed Abdalla ran a huge lifetime-best of 14;37.90 (old best 14:52.09) for second and Anzures was third (14:48.80) to round out a Bruin sweep in the event.

The 4x100m relay team of freshmen Jamal Alston and Karlton Rolle, and juniors Stan Griffin and Brandon Smith ran a season-best and improved regional time of 39.71 (old best, 40.31) to finish second. The foursome's time ranks 12th in the NCAA this season.

Junior Marlon Patterson ran a regional qualifier and lifetime-best of 3:46.86 in the 1500m to finish second overall.

In the hurdles, sophomore Brian Law finished third in the highs (15.04) and third in the intermediates (53.15), while freshman Nevin Gutteriez ran a big lifetime-best of 52.84 in the 400m hurdles to finish second (old best 54.78).

Senior Elijah Wells ran a season-best 47.53 in the 400m to finish third overall. In the 100m, Alston and Smith both ran season-best marks as Alston was second in 10.60 and Smith was third in 10.69. In the 200m, Rolle finished third (21.35).

In the 800m, sophomore Cory Primm had a big day as he won with a season-best and improved regional qualifier of 1:48.93. That marks ranks 13th in the NCAA this season. Sophomore Scott Crawford finished third in 1:50.71.

A dropped handoff between the first and second leg of the 4x400m relay team again hindered the team's time as they finished second in 3:18.21.

In field event action, sophomore Greg Woepse won the pole vault with a jump of 17-1, while sophomore Casey DiCesare finished third with a lifetime-best and regional mark of 17-1.

Sophomore Taylor Hobson had another strong meet, winning the long jump (24-9.50) and placing second in the high (7-00.50). Sophomore Jonathan Clark finished third in both the triple (50-7.50) and high (6-8.75).

Sophomore Bo Taylor led the Bruin shot putters as he won with an improved regional mark and season-best throw of 58-6.75. Classmate Nick Robinson was second with a mark of 55-5.75. In the discus, freshman Thomas Nagengast finished third with a throw of 170-0. Junior Andreas Drbal finished second in the javelin with a throw of 193-9.

USC now leads UCLA 41-4 all-time and have won two of the last three meetings between the two programs.
