Washington Completes Sweep With 3-2 Win Over USC In 10
May 3, 2009
SEATTLE - Troy Scott went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI Sunday, delivering the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Washington Huskies earned the Pac-10 Conference sweep over the USC Trojans, 3-2. Pierce Rankin also homered for the Huskies, who won their seventh straight in the series against the Trojans.
Brian Pearl earned his first win on the season after throwing two scoreless innings, allowing a hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Andrew Kittredge started for Washington (21-23, 10-8 Pac-10), going seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Junior righty Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS), who was born in nearby Bellevue, racked up double digits in strikeouts for the third time this season for USC (22-23, 10-11 Pac-10). In seven innings, Stock gave up two runs on seven hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts.
Rankin gave Washington the 1-0 lead in the first, hitting his sixth home run of the season with a solo homer to left.
Mike O'Neill singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third in the USC first on Grant Green's grounder, but Kittredge got Ricky Oropesa to fly out to end the inning. Hector Rabago tripled in the second with one out, but the Trojans again came up scoreless after designated hitter Brandon Garcia lined out and third baseman Billy Pinkerton struck out looking.
The Trojans finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth, taking the 2-1 lead. Alex Sherrod led off the inning with a walk and Green doubled to put runners at second and third. Oropesa then hammered a two-run double off the fence in left with no outs, but was left stranded at third after Kittredge retired the next three batters.
Scott tied it with his second home run in the series, leading off the Washington sixth with a lead off solo shot to left.
In the Trojan half of the 10th, Sherrod singled and Green walked with one out. Oropesa lifted a long fly ball to center, advancing the runners, followed by an intentional walk to Anthony Vasquez. Pearl then struck out Rabago for the third out.
Jake Rife singled to right to lead off the Washington half of the 10th. Kyle Conley then hit a slow ground ball to short that looked like a possible double play, but second baseman Joe De Pinto dropped Green's throw as the Huskies put runners at first and second with two outs. Scott then flared a double to center as Rife scored the winning run.
USC returns home today for the start of finals week, hosting Cal Poly on Tuesday (May 5) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday's game will feature a live video webcast on usctrojans.com.
