Berkowitz Named Pac-10 Coach of the Year

Arizona men's tennis coach Tad Berkowitz has been named Pac-10 Men's Coach of the Year, Commission Tom Hansen announced this afternoon. This is the first honor for Berkowitz. In addition, sophomore Jay Goldman was selected to Second Team All-Conference.
This season, Berkowitz has led the Wildcats to a 17-5 record and the school's seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament and the first since 2006. In four seasons, Berkowitz has a record of 45-41. In addition, the Wildcats climbed the rankings as high as No. 17 on March 3, 2009, the highest ranking since the end of the 1981-82 season.
Berkowitz joined the Wildcat family in 2004. In the spring of 2005, he was promoted to head coach after serving as assistant to hall-of-fame coach Bill Wright. He began his coaching career in 1999 as an assistant to the Alabama. In his final year, he helped the Crimson Tide earn a No.18 national ranking and a berth in the NCAA Championship.
For his sophomore season, Goldman has played at position No.1 and has compiled a 12-7 singles record. He is currently ranked No. 62 in singles play and remains the only Wildcat to be ranked in singles or doubles. He has been paired with Pat Metham (1-1), Ravid Hazi (4-4), Jason Zafiros (0-1) and Ola Bakke (2-1) in doubles.
Goldman leads the team with four victories over ranked opponents: a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 123 Holden Seguso of UCLA (4/11), a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over No. 48 Bradley Klahn of Stanford (4-3), a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 61 Rudolf Siwy of Fresno State (2/28) and a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 45 Raony Carvalho of Texas Tech (2/22). He had a seven-single's match winning streak that started against then-No. 34 Texas Tech and ended against then-No. 27 Washington, during that seven-match winning streak won 10 straight sets. On March 3, he reached No. 51 in the ITA Singles Rankings, the highest ranking of the season. Goldman was named Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for March 9-15
