Former Beaver Brian Barden Named NL Rookie Of The Month For April
May 6, 2009
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Former Oregon State infielder Brian Barden has been named the National League's Rookie of the Month for April, it was announced recently by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Barden had an outstanding month of April, batting .385 in 21 games, displaying his trademark versatility by playing third base, second and shortstop. He had a .641 slugging percentage, which led all NL rookies, and was second with an on-base percentage of .432.
Barden hit three home runs for the Cardinals through the month, collecting seven runs batted in.
'I thought my rookie status had worn off after a couple call-ups,' Barden told MLB.com after learning of the honor. 'But I guess it still counts. It's kind of cool.'
On the year, he's batting .380, with a double and three walks in addition to the home run and seven RBI. His club, St. Louis, currently leads the NL Central by two games.
Barden is with his second professional organization. He was selected in the sixth round of the 2002 MLB First-Year Player Draft by Arizona and made his Major League debut with the Diamondbacks in 2007. The Cardinals picked him up shortly after his debut with the Diamondbacks.
Barden, who resides in Tucson, Ariz., became Oregon State's first Olympian in baseball this past summer when he helped lead Team USA to a bronze at the Beijing Olympics. While there, he played in eight games, batting .265 with a home run and five RBI.
It is the second such Rookie of the Month honor for a former Beaver in the last two years. In September of 2007, Jacoby Ellsbury was named the American League's Rookie of the Month while playing for Boston.
Barden's former club, Oregon State, plays again Friday when visiting Washington at Safeco Field in Seattle. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. PT. The game can be heard live on the Beaver Sports Network and Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com).
The game is also scheduled to air live on Comcast SportsNet in the states of Oregon and Washington.
