Nathan Adrian Featured on Discovery Channel's MythBusters
May 6, 2009
BERKELEY, CALIF. - University of California sophomore standout Nathan Adrian will be featured on tonight's (Wednesday, May 6) MythBusters, 'Swimming in Syrup' episode at 9 p.m. on the Discovery Channel. Adrian, one of the nation's premier sprint freestylers, swam in a 25-yard pool with regular water and then swam in a pool filled with Guar gum to prove or debunk the myth that Guar gum would slow him down.
'It was a really fun experience,' said Adrian, who along with the general public does not know the results of the test. 'It was cool hanging out with the show's hosts, Jamie (Hyneman) and Adam (Savage), and getting treated like a T.V. star. It was a nice day in November and it allowed me to miss practice.'
Adrian was named 2009 Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year and Pac-10 Swimmer of the Meet after claiming the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle titles at the conference championships. He went on to become the 2009 NCAA champion in the 50 free with an American record 18.71 and the 100 free in an American record 41.80. The Bremerton, Wash. native became the fourth Golden Bear to earn Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year accolades (Ugar Taner in 1996, Anthony Ervin in 2002, Duje Draganja in 2005). This past summer in Beijing, China, he was an Olympic gold medalist as a member of the United States' 400-meter freestyle relay team.
Adrian (3.58, undeclared) was one of seven Cal men swimmers selected first-team Pac-10 All-Academic as well. The Bears, under the direction of second year head coach David Durden, finished fourth at the NCAA championships (350 points) for the second year in a row.
