Veal Wins 1,500m at WOU Twilight
May 6, 2009
SALEM, Ore. – Had senior Sylvia Veal not been running unattached she would have run Oregon State’s sixth fastest 800-meters time in history at the Western Oregon Twilight on Wednesday night.
Veal (Aloha, Ore.) ran a personal best as she won the 800-meters with a time of 2:12.70 at Willamette University’s Charles Bowles Track.
“Sylvia was just using this race as a tune-up for the Oregon Twilight and ended up running a great race,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “It was impressive to see her lead the whole race in a training meet.”
Other Beavers in action included sophomore Kambria Schumacher (Sweet Home, Ore.) finishing second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:03.40, sister Cassandra Schumacher (Sweet Home, Ore.) finished third in the steeple at 12:10.97 and freshman Melissa Kauffman (Hood River, Ore.) finished sixth in the 1,500-meters with a time of 5:02.28.
Ex-Beaver Lauren Denfeld, competing for Strands running club, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:11.08.
“Despite the weather being windy, cold and wet we put together some really good races,” Sullivan said. “I was very pleased with how our women raced tonight.”
Oregon State women’s track is back in action Saturday evening, May 9, at the Oregon Twilight in Eugene, Ore. Senior Holly Thomson and freshman Casey Masterson are scheduled to run in the 800-meters, Veal and sophomore Abby Chesimet are slated for the 1,500-meters and sophomore Hayley Oveson is tentatively scheduled for the 5,000-meters.
